Getting a new phone is exciting, but the thought of losing your contacts, photos, or precious WhatsApp chats can be stressful. Fortunately, transferring data has become incredibly easy. Here is a quick guide on how to move your digital life to your new device.
1. Moving from Android to Android
The easiest way to transfer data between two Android phones is using Google's built-in tools.
- Ensure both phones are fully charged and connected to a stable Wi-Fi network.
- On the old phone, go to Settings > Google > Backup and ensure "Backup to Google Drive" is turned on. Tap "Back up now".
- Turn on the new phone and begin the setup process.
- When prompted, choose to restore data from a backup or copy apps and data.
- Log in with the same Google Account. You can choose to transfer data over Wi-Fi or by connecting the two phones with a USB-C to USB-C cable.
Brands like Samsung also offer their own excellent tools, like Samsung Smart Switch, which makes the process even faster.
2. Moving from iPhone to iPhone
Apple makes this magical with a feature called "Quick Start."
- Turn on your new iPhone and place it near your old iPhone.
- A screen will appear on your old device offering the option to use your Apple ID to set up the new phone. Tap "Continue."
- An animation will appear on the new phone. Hold your old phone over the new phone to center the animation in the viewfinder.
- Enter your old phone's passcode on the new phone and follow the prompts to transfer your data directly.
3. Transferring WhatsApp Chats
WhatsApp is crucial for most Kenyans. Here is how to save your chats:
- Same OS (Android to Android / iOS to iOS): Open WhatsApp on the old phone > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. Tap "Back Up" to save it to Google Drive or iCloud. On the new phone, install WhatsApp, verify your number, and tap "Restore."
- Cross OS (iPhone to Android / Android to iPhone): This used to be difficult, but WhatsApp now officially supports cross-platform transfers. You must do this during the initial setup of the new phone using the "Move to iOS" app (for Android to iPhone) or the native data transfer cable method (for iPhone to Android).
Pro Tip: Don't Wipe Yet!
Never factory reset or sell your old phone until you have verified that absolutely everything (contacts, photos, banking apps) is working perfectly on the new device.
